How to

Step by step
  1. You should already land both a Water Jump frontside 360 and a backflip consistently.

A cork 540 blends those two on a tilted axis, so if your body doesn't know each one separately, you'll get lost in the air.

  2. Ride the brush (the artificial-turf in-run) at a steady medium speed.

Too slow and you won't carry enough distance; too fast and the rotation can't keep up. Aim for about the speed that lets you complete a frontside 360.

  3. Just before the lip, bend both knees slightly to load up and send your eyes ahead toward the frontside direction (the way your back will face).

Your gaze leads the spin, and your shoulders and hips follow it around.

  4. Off the lip, push through both legs and rise up while dropping your lead-foot shoulder and tilting your head down toward the toe (toes) side.

Unlike a straight-up frontside 360, dropping your head down at an angle starts you spinning on a tilted axis. All of your spinning momentum is set in this instant of takeoff — you can't add to it in the air.

  5. Once airborne, hug both arms in front of your chest and pull both knees up to make your body small.

The more compact you are, the faster you spin for the same momentum, which buys you the time to come all the way around to 540.

  6. Holding that tilted axis, the horizontal and front-to-back rotations mix together through 540 degrees.

Late in the spin, when the base of your board (under the bindings) and the landing water come into view, open your tucked arms and knees and extend to brake the rotation.

  7. Level the base of the board parallel to the water and land on both feet at once.

As you touch down, stack your spine tall and brace your core lightly so the water's resistance doesn't fold you forward or back.

Tips

All of your spinning momentum is set the instant you leave the lip. Build the pre-wind (eyes, then shoulders, then hips) and the downward head tilt at takeoff, not in the air.

COMMON MISTAKE

Ends up as a plain frontside 360 → You didn't drop your head down at takeoff, so the axis stayed upright and you only spun flat. Add dropping the lead-foot shoulder and tilting your head down toward the toe side off the lip.
