How to
Step by stepApproach over the brush (artificial turf) at a steady speed, just fast enough not to stall.
Brush has more friction than snow and bleeds speed, so enter slightly faster than you would for the same trick on snow. Keep your eyes on the lip (the edge you launch from).
Just before the lip, lightly wind your upper body back toward the backside (heel side) to load a coil.
Closing your shoulder line slightly against your direction of travel is enough. Unwinding this coil is what starts your rotation at takeoff.
At the lip, push the board straight down through the balls of both feet to pop.
At the same time, unwind your upper body toward the front (frontside, toe side), turning shoulders first, then hips, then feet. Lead with the upper body rather than spinning your feet first.
Once airborne, bend your knees lightly and pull your arms and legs in to make yourself compact.
Your spin speed is set the instant you leave the lip and can't be added in the air, so the tighter you tuck, the easier you carry that same spin around. Send your eyes in the direction of the spin, toward the landing.
Around past 90 degrees, point your eyes and shoulders toward the foot that will become your new front foot (your original back foot), and set up a switch (riding backward) landing stance.
Bring both feet together and land flat on your feet, keeping the board parallel to the water.
If the nose (front) drops, the board knifes into the water and throws you forward, so keep your toes slightly up and slap the surface with your whole sole. Absorb the resistance of the water with a soft knee bend to slow down.
Tips & common mistakes
In the app — learn while you logSpin from the load and release of your upper body. Don't fling your arms — close the shoulder line first, then open it, and the rotation comes from there. Throwing only the arms stretches your body out, slows the spin, and you won't make it around to 180.
Coming up short of the water, or landing before finishing the spin → caused by scrubbing too much speed on the brush. Run your approach line through the watered (wetter, slicker) section and re-set it to a speed that doesn't stall.
