How to

Step by step
  1. From the start of the brush slope, ride straight toward the lip (the edge of the take-off ramp).

A slow, controlled speed is plenty here. Since a straight air relies on posture rather than momentum, begin with modest speed.

  2. On the run-in, stay evenly weighted over both your front and back foot, and bend your knees slightly (about 30 degrees) to lower your hips.

Keeping your weight directly over the board stops you from tipping forward or back at take-off. Look ahead past the lip, toward the patch of water where you will land.

  3. As you reach the lip, let yourself leave naturally.

Don't actively jump; just allow a light rise from your knees. Popping hard tilts your body forward or back and spoils the landing, so for a straight air think "slide off" rather than "jump".

  4. In the air, keep both feet together and your knees bent, holding the board directly beneath you.

Spread your arms lightly at hip height and keep your upper body upright. Weight your toes and heels evenly so the nose doesn't rise or drop, keeping the base flat.

  5. Land with the whole base of the board parallel to the water.

If the nose or tail catches first, the board snags and throws you forward, so slap the entire base onto the surface at once for a safe landing.

  6. The instant the board touches the water, bend your already-flexed knees deeper to absorb the impact.

Sinking down with your legs acting as springs softens the jolt through your hips and back. Once you've sunk in, relax and glide through the water toward the poolside.

Tips

Always wear a life jacket and follow the facility's rules. Water landings can hit harder than snow, and staying buoyant keeps you safe.

COMMON MISTAKE

The board catches on landing and throws you forward → The nose or tail is piercing the water first. In the air, weight your toes and heels evenly and bring the whole base down parallel to the surface so it lands flat all at once.
