How to

Step by step
  1. Before anything else, you should already be solid on two things: the backflip into an airbag (a soft landing mat), and a straight, no-rotation jump off the water jump (WJ) ramp.

If either feels shaky, lock those in first.

  2. Approach the lip (the edge you launch from) straight, with both skis in a parallel stance.

Hold a steady medium speed that won't stop you, without accelerating or braking into the ramp. Your spin can only be created at the moment you leave the lip, so a clean, stable approach matters.

  3. At the top of the lip, extend your ankles, knees, and hips all at once and push straight up.

At the same time, lift your chin, send your head and shoulders back, and arch your chest toward the sky. This 'rise up while sending the shoulders back' move is what creates the backward rotation. Aim for height rather than distance forward so you have time to finish the flip.

  4. Once airborne, move your eyes quickly: ceiling → behind you → the water.

Pull your knees toward your chest and draw your thighs to your stomach to make your body small. The more you tuck your arms and legs in, the faster you spin for the same launch effort.

  5. When you've passed about three-quarters of the rotation and can see the water below, extend your knees and hips to open your body straight.

Spreading out slows the rotation and prevents over-rotating.

  6. Land with the tails (back) of your skis angled slightly down.

Cutting the water tail-first keeps your body from getting thrown backward and lets your legs absorb the impact. As you touch down, bend your knees softly and sink to soak up the landing.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Your spin is set the instant you leave the lip and can't be added in the air, so getting height off the takeoff comes first. More height buys you the time to finish the flip.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing on your back from under-rotation → Both your takeoff height and the backward send of your shoulders are weak, so you lack the time and the spin to finish. This is the most dangerous outcome, so nail your tuck and rotation into the airbag before trying again.
