How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the kicker straight on and pop off the lip exactly like a straight jump, pressing through the whole ski to launch straight up.

Keeping any sideways or spinning motion out of the takeoff gives you a stable platform to build the asymmetric pose in the air.

  2. As you leave the lip, keep your eyes just below the horizon rather than dropping them to the snow.

Since there is no rotation, chasing the skis with your eyes tips your body off balance.

  3. At the peak of the jump, fold the knee and hip of your grabbing leg hard (let us say the left leg) and pull the left heel up toward your buttock.

This kicks the tail up behind you and brings it within reach.

  4. Reach your left hand (same side as the folded leg) back behind your body and grab the left ski toward the tail, behind the binding.

Arching your lower back slightly helps the trailing hand meet the ski.

  5. Keep the other leg, the right, extended and push it forward, opening the legs wide front to back.

Folding one leg tends to drop that hip, so drive the straight right leg forward and lift your torso to keep both sides level.

  6. Hold the grabbed pose from the peak until you start to drop.

Keep your chest facing forward and your shoulders level; your upper body supports the axis that the single folded leg would otherwise twist.

  7. About half a breath before landing, release the left hand, lower the folded left leg, and bring both feet together.

Land on both skis at once and absorb the impact by bending both knees and ankles. Release too late and the legs will not even out, leaving you on one foot.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Pop straight up off the lip; the more height you have, the longer the tail stays near your hand and the easier the grab. A low, flat takeoff leaves no time to fold the leg and reach.

COMMON MISTAKE

Hand cannot reach the ski → the knee and hip are not folded enough, so the tail stays too far back. Pull the heel all the way to your buttock to bring the tail to your hand instead of reaching for it.
