How to

Step by step
  1. First, be able to carve smooth arcs at a slow, controlled speed.

A dry-slope brush grips more than snow and lets the skis run less, so start a notch slower than you would for short turns on snow.

  2. On a gentle to moderate pitch, set off in a parallel stance (skis shoulder-width and parallel).

Keep your chest and belly button facing down the hill (the valley) the whole time, and turn only from the hips down. If your upper body twists along, the arcs widen and the turns stop being short.

  3. Load the balls of your feet (just behind the big toes) and keep pressing the front of the boot tongues with your shins.

This keeps your weight forward so you don't sit back and catch an edge.

  4. At the moment you switch turns, drop your hips, bend both knees, and ease the pressure off the skis (sink to lighten the load).

In that light instant, send both knees toward the new turn to flip the edges to the other side.

  5. Once the edges flip, tip both knees to the inside of the turn (the way you're turning) to set the edge angle.

But brush bites suddenly, so use less angle than on snow: tilt a small amount with just your ankles and knees, and keep your upper body upright.

  6. Use the pole as the trigger for each switch.

Lightly plant the downhill pole forward toward the valley, then use that touch as the cue to send your knees across. Repeat to build rhythm. A light touch is enough, no hard stab.

  7. Link sink → send → edge in even intervals, descending at a steady tempo like a metronome.

Start slow, then build the tempo as it feels natural.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Keeping your chest and belly button aimed down the hill twists only your lower body, which springs back and flows naturally into the next turn. Turning the upper body too kills that spring and slows the tempo.

COMMON MISTAKE

Arcs stay wide and never become short → the upper body is rotating with the lower body → fix the chest and belly button down the hill and turn only from the hips down. Keep your eyes two or three turns ahead, down the slope.
