How to

Step by step
  1. Glide straight into the brush slope with the board kept flat, at a slow speed that still keeps you moving.

The brush grabs an engaged edge easily, so don't tip onto the toe or heel edge — press evenly through the whole sole to keep the base flat. Keep your eyes a little ahead, in your direction of travel.

  2. Just before the lip (the take-off edge), bend both knees deep (roughly toward a right angle) to lower your center of mass, and keep your upper body tall.

Stack your hips right over the board so you don't sit back.

  3. From that low stance, extend both legs to pop up off the lip.

Keep the base flat as you pop. Because the brush can suddenly slow or snag you when an edge catches the turf, pop a touch earlier than you would on snow — while the board is still on the lip — and it will time out right.

  4. As you pop, lead the rotation by turning your shoulders and head toward your frontside (your back faces the new direction).

The spin you carry is set the instant you leave the lip and can't be added in the air, so pull your arms and legs in tight and send your gaze where you want to go — the board follows lightly on the same momentum.

  5. After a full 180 you land switch (back foot leading).

Bend both knees to absorb the impact and set the board down flat onto the brush. Keep your hips right over the board or a hair behind it so the turf doesn't grab your front foot and pitch you forward.

  6. Ride away switch, keeping the base flat.

Even a small tilt lets the brush bite an edge, so when you want to slow down, ease your weight on gradually rather than carving hard.

Tips

Keep the board flat on both the pop and the landing. The turf catches an engaged edge easily, and even a slight tilt can snag the board, killing the spin or throwing you forward.

COMMON MISTAKE

The edge snags the turf at take-off and you stall forward → the board is slightly tipped onto the toe or heel edge at the lip → press evenly through the whole sole and extend both legs straight up with the base flat.
