How to

Step by step
  1. Be able to land a straight jump consistently first.

If possible, learn the feel of a backflip on a trampoline or a foam pit beforehand, so you don't panic the moment your head points downward in the air.

  2. Always remove your poles and leave them with the facility.

A pole can hit your body or face mid-flip, so keep your hands free.

  3. Approach straight in a parallel stance with both skis together.

Bend your knees slightly, keep your weight centered over the middle of the skis, and ride in at a slow, steady speed that won't stop you. Too fast and you'll travel forward instead of rotating, so keep it under control. Look at a point above and just beyond the lip (the takeoff edge).

  4. As you reach the lip, sink down by bending your ankles, knees, and hips a little deeper.

This loaded crouch is the power source for your takeoff.

  5. At the top of the lip, extend your ankles, knees, and hips in one quick burst from the ground up, pressing through the balls of your feet rather than your heels, and rise straight up.

Go up, not back — that height is exactly the room you need to complete the rotation.

  6. As you extend, lift your chin to drop your head back and open your chest to arch your upper body backward.

Sending it back in the order head, then chest, then hips starts the rotation smoothly. Push your hips slightly forward so your spin axis runs through the center of your body.

  7. Move your eyes in order: up to the sky you launched toward, then straight behind you, then to the landing.

Your body follows your gaze, so leading with your eyes keeps the rotation from stalling.

  8. Once you're rotating, pull both knees toward your chest so the tails of your skis don't catch the surface — tuck the whole package tight.

The smaller you make your body, the faster you spin for the same amount of momentum, so if you're rotating too slowly, tuck tighter first.

  9. When you're about three-quarters around and the landing comes into view below, extend your legs and open both arms out to the sides.

Spreading out slows the rotation and prevents over-rotating.

  10. Land flat on your back on the air mat.

At first, don't worry about form — just focus on completing the rotation and landing safely on your back. Refine your landing posture as you get comfortable.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Takeoff is "jump straight up, then throw it back" — not "jump backward." The more straight-up height you get, the longer you stay in the air and the more room you have to finish. Leaning back first sends you low and flat, and you fall short onto your back.

COMMON MISTAKE

Falling short and landing partway down your back → not enough takeoff height, or too shallow a tuck → rise straight up high first, then pull both knees deep to your chest to make yourself small in the air.
