How to

Step by step
  1. Start on a gentle to moderate slope at a slow, controlled speed.

Begin with a tail press turn, it's the steadier one. Shift your weight onto the back foot, from the ball of the foot back toward the heel, about 30:70 front to back, and lift the nose slightly off the snow.

  2. Keep the nose lifted and bend your back knee to 70-80 degrees, stacking your hips directly over the back foot.

If your center drifts forward the nose drops, so keep your seat sitting over the back heel.

  3. Begin the turn.

Don't switch feet to change edge, tilt the back ankle instead. Roll the ankle in the direction you want to go, toe-side to turn toward your toes, heel-side to turn toward your heels. Keep the 70:30 weighting unchanged and set the edge with ankle angle alone.

  4. Look ahead to the exit of the turn before you get there.

As your eyes lead, the hips and shoulders follow naturally, and you can carve the arc while keeping the board lifted.

  5. As you finish the arc, lower the nose gently and return from 30:70 to an even, neutral stance on both feet.

  6. For a nose press turn, reverse front and back.

Load the front foot 70:30 to lift the tail, and tilt the front ankle to set the edge. It's easy to pitch forward here, so bend the knees deeply and drop the hips while keeping your upper body upright.

  7. Once it feels natural, link tail to nose alternately, switching only the edge without ever releasing the press, to build a flowing rhythm.

Tips

Change edge with the tilt of the loaded ankle, not by switching feet. Switching feet evens out the weight for a moment and releases the press.

COMMON MISTAKE

You can hold the press but can't turn → the center drifts forward and back, breaking the weight ratio → bend the knee, lock the hips directly over the loaded foot, and move only the ankle while holding that position.
