How to

Step by step
  1. On a medium-or-steeper slope, ride straight with enough speed that you won't stall.

Pick a spot you can pop off, such as a flat section or just before a kicker.

  2. Two or three meters before takeoff, bend both knees deeply (around a 100-110 degree knee angle), drop your hips, and wind your upper body and arms slightly toward your frontside (belly side) relative to your direction of travel.

This wind-up stores the rotation, so keep your lower body pointed with the board while only your upper body coils ahead.

  3. Shift your weight from the tail (back) toward the nose (front), press the snow through the heel side of your back foot to unweight, and unwind your coiled upper body sharply toward your backside (behind your back).

Swinging your front-side arm from the shoulder around toward your back adds to the unwind. The amount of spin is set the instant you leave the snow and can't be added in the air, so build and release it fully before takeoff.

  4. Once airborne, pull both knees toward your chest and hug both arms in toward the center of your body.

The tighter you tuck, the faster you spin for the same effort, so make yourself compact here to complete the one-and-a-half rotation (540 degrees).

  5. Lead with your eyes (and head) toward the spin direction (backside) from the wind-up stage, turning your head ahead of your body to find the landing.

The blind moment as you pass behind your back is shorter when your head turns first, so the spin is less likely to stall.

  6. When you spot the landing, slowly open your tucked arms and legs to slow the spin.

Opening the arms widens you out and eases the rotation, keeping you from over-rotating.

  7. Land switch (riding the opposite way from your normal stance) with both knees bent, setting the whole board onto the snow at once and absorbing the impact with your knees.

Tighten any small rotation left over relative to your direction of travel with your knees and toes once the base is down.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Prerequisite: you can land a backside 360 (BS360) switch cleanly and consistently. The 540 just adds a half rotation, so a sloppy 360 gives you a shaky foundation.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing sideways without finishing the spin -> your wind-up was too shallow, or your limbs opened in the air. Coil the upper body fully and release it before takeoff, and pull your knees and arms toward your center while airborne.
