How to

Step by step
  1. On a moderate-to-steep slope, build enough speed and ride your approach with the board nearly flat, aimed in the direction you want to spin.

More than half of the spin is created before you leave the ground, so stay relaxed here and let the board run.

  2. Shift your weight onto your front foot (the foot toward your direction of travel), bend that knee deeply, and press the nose (front) of the board into the snow to load its front half.

Stack your hips over the front foot and let the back foot lift slightly. Begin sending your eyes toward where you want to rotate (frontside, so look ahead in the spin direction).

  3. As the loaded board springs back, extend both legs explosively to unweight, and at the same time lead the rotation by turning your upper body and hips frontside first.

Throw your arms toward the spin side and pass the twist from shoulders to hips to legs to build more spinning momentum.

  4. The instant you leave the snow, pull both knees to your chest and draw your arms in to make yourself as small as possible.

The tighter you tuck, the faster you spin on the same momentum from takeoff, buying time to complete the full two rotations (720 degrees). Keep your eyes leading the spin.

  5. Past one and a half rotations, open your arms slightly to slow the spin and spot your landing.

Land on both feet at once in your normal stance, bending your knees to absorb the impact.

Tips

Your spinning momentum is set the moment you leave the ground and cannot be added in the air. Focus everything on the pre-spin and the pop at takeoff, and use the air only to tune speed: tuck in to spin faster, open up to slow down.

COMMON MISTAKE

Falling short, dropping at one and a half rotations → weak lead rotation or pop at takeoff means not enough initial speed. Pull your arms and knees in tighter in the air to spin faster, and increase how much your shoulders lead the rotation before takeoff.
