How to

Step by step
  1. Ride onto the rail in a boardslide, with your body sideways to the rail and the board crossing it at a right angle.

Keep your weight even on both feet, your hips stacked over the rail, and your eyes looking ahead to the tail-side edge of the rail.

  2. As the end of the rail approaches, start winding your upper body slowly toward the way you want to spin.

For a frontside 270 (chest-first rotation, with your front leading around), send your chest and chin around toward the direction of travel. Keep your lower body resisting, still pointing sideways, so you build a twist between your upper and lower body. That stored twist is what unwinds you the moment you leave the rail.

  3. Wait for the instant when the nose (front) clears the end of the rail while the tail (back) is still on it.

The moment the tail leaves the rail, lightly extend both knees to pop your body up and release the twist you stored all at once. That sets the board spinning.

  4. While you spin, pull your arms and shoulders in tight to stay compact.

Your spin speed is set the instant you leave the rail and can't be added in the air, so the smaller you make yourself, the faster you come around on the same momentum.

  5. Once you've come 270 degrees (three-quarters of a turn) and the board points straight down the fall line, in the direction of travel, spot your landing with your eyes and get ready to bend your knees.

  6. As the board touches down flat (whole base at once), bend both knees deeply to absorb the impact.

After landing, shift a little weight onto your front foot and ride away without stopping.

Tips

The release point is the instant the tail (back) clears the rail. Use that as your trigger and your pop timing will be consistent. Too early and you start spinning on the rail and catch; too late and you spin after dropping, so you run short of rotation.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing with the board still angled, short of full rotation → You started spinning after the tail left the rail, or your upper-body wind was too shallow. Wind your upper body early while still on the rail to store the twist, then release it all at once the instant you leave.
