How to

Step by step
  1. First make sure you can land WJ 180 cleanly and feel comfortable touching down tail-first.

Approach just slightly faster than your 180, running straight at the kicker surface.

  2. On the brush surface keep both skis at shoulder width, squeezing your inner thighs lightly to hold them parallel.

Bend your knees shallowly toward takeoff and keep your weight centered over both feet.

  3. Just before the lip, start winding your chest, shoulders, and eyes ahead toward the spin direction.

Swing both arms in the spin direction to add to the lead from your shoulders.

  4. At the top of the lip, extend both legs at once and push straight up.

Leave the lip without tipping forward or back and without letting the skis spread apart — this is what keeps you from breaking position in the air.

  5. Once you leave the lip, you can no longer add to your spin.

So pull your knees lightly toward your chest to make your body small, which speeds up the rotation with the same momentum. Keep your eyes leading toward where you want to go, pulling the spin around with your head.

  6. Don't let your eyes stop past 180; around 270 the water comes into view.

Only now ease the knee tuck and open your body slightly to brake the spin and stop facing forward at exactly 360.

  7. Land tail-first, entering at an angle to your direction of travel (don't lay the skis flat).

Bend your knees and hips softly to absorb the impact, and once you stop, pop your skis off and head for the pool edge.

Tips

The amount of spin is set the instant you leave the lip and can't be added in the air. The more you build the lead with your shoulders, arms, and eyes before takeoff, the more rotation you carry with the same momentum.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing sideways around 270 → your lead off the lip was too small, or your eyes stopped at 180 → wind your shoulders and eyes further ahead and add the knee tuck; if it still won't come around, drop back to 180.
