How to

Step by step
  1. On a gentle-to-medium powder slope, glide straight at a steady speed that's just fast enough not to stall.

Too fast and the nose digs in and pitches you forward; too slow and the sunken nose won't release, so keep a flowing medium pace.

  2. Bend both knees to sink slightly and look slightly ahead in your direction of travel.

This is your set-up crouch before the deep press, from which you'll move forward in one motion.

  3. Shift your weight onto the front foot and press the snow with the ball of your front foot (under the big toe) to bury the nose.

Load briefly to about 70 percent front, 30 percent back, bend the front knee deep (close to 90 degrees), and drive your hips forward over it. The buried nose catches in the snow and becomes your pivot point.

  4. At the same instant you sink the nose, release the back leg and lift the back knee to float the tail.

The harder you drive the front, the lighter the back becomes, so press (front) and unweight (back) together.

  5. Once the tail floats, lead with your hips and shoulders toward the direction you want to spin, and move your eyes to the exit (where you want to face).

When your upper body turns first, the board follows around the buried nose. Start with just 90 degrees.

  6. When you've turned as far as you want, ease off the front-foot press, bend both knees evenly again, and set the tail back onto the snow.

Return your weight to 50/50 front-to-back and ride out on the nose as it floats back up.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

You only need enough depth for the nose to catch as an axis, so deep powder (roughly 30 cm or more) works best. In shallow snow the nose won't bury and there's no pivot.

COMMON MISTAKE

Nose digs in deep and you flip forward → too slow or pressing the front foot too hard. Keep a flowing medium speed, hit 70/30 front for just an instant, then move straight to unweighting.
