How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the rail at a diagonal, at a slow but steady speed that won't stall you.

Face your frontside (toe side) toward the rail so your chest squares up to it.

  2. Just before the rail, sink down to load up (bend both knees to about 70 degrees), then press off your front toes to ollie.

Keep it low; just clear enough to set the board on the rail.

  3. The instant you leave the snow, lead with your rear shoulder (the one away from your direction of travel), then let your hips follow.

Rotate the board about 90 degrees so the tail-side of the base meets the rail.

  4. Touch down tail-first on the base, with the nose poking out past the far side of the rail.

Lean your upper body well forward and press straight down on the rail through your rear heel and full rear foot. Keep most of your weight on the rear foot (roughly 3 front, 7 back).

  5. While sliding, keep your eyes on the rail's exit (your direction of travel).

Hold your hips stacked over the rear foot and stay low at a constant height so the board tracks straight instead of chattering.

  6. As the end of the rail nears, lightly unweight off the rear foot, swing your shoulders and hips back toward your original direction, and straighten the board out.

Absorb the landing softly with both knees.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Finish the full 90-degree rotation in the air. Trying to twist after you're on the rail throws off your axis and drops you. Lead with the rear shoulder and let the hips chase it so the body turns as one piece and you don't come up short.

COMMON MISTAKE

The nose doesn't clear the rail and the board sits crooked → you under-rotated in the air, usually because you turned shoulders and hips together and split the effort. Snap the rear shoulder first, then let the hips follow a beat later to reach the full 90 degrees.
