How to

Step by step
  1. Start on a gentle to moderate slope at a slow-to-medium speed you can stop from, with the board pointed straight down the fall line.

Too much speed makes the edge catch suddenly and throws you forward, so keep it controllable at first.

  2. Look slightly ahead toward the direction you want to spray.

A spray turns the board nearly 90 degrees, so looking where you're going lets your upper body open and the board follow.

  3. Bend both knees (just under 90 degrees), drop your hips, and stack your weight directly over the board.

The lower you are, the better you can hold against the snow pushing back.

  4. Swing the board sideways across the fall line.

For a toe-side spray, push through the balls of both feet; for a heel-side spray, push through both heels. Lead the swing with your back foot while keeping the front foot as a pivot so the board stays stable as it turns across.

  5. Don't slam the edge in all at once — increase the edge angle into the snow gradually.

Aim for a half-carve, half-slide balance so the edge shaves the snow; that's what throws the spray high. A fully set edge catches and stops you; too flat won't cut.

  6. At the moment you want the snow to fly highest, extend your dropped hips slightly upward to release the pressure off the board.

The snow you were pressing down lets go all at once and shoots up.

  7. Either come to a stop, or at the end of the cut point the board back down the fall line and ride on.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Fresh snow or spring corn (soft, coarse granular snow) flies lightest and highest. Hard-packed snow or ice barely sprays and lets the edge skid out dangerously, so avoid it.

COMMON MISTAKE

The edge catches suddenly and you fall forward → you set the edge too hard all at once, so it walls up instead of shaving → start with a shallow angle and deepen it gradually, keeping a half-slide feel.
