How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the airmat in a straight line.

A slow, won't-stop-on-its-own speed is plenty. Keep your knees softly bent (about 30 degrees) and put a little weight on your toe edge, with the board pointing straight at the lip.

  2. Just before takeoff, turn your eyes toward the spin direction (back-left for a regular rider) and gently wind both shoulders the same way.

Keep your hips and board still facing forward, so you build a twist between your upper and lower body. That twist is the spring that carries the board around after you leave the lip.

  3. At the lip, extend both knees to pop straight up.

At the same instant, release the stored shoulder twist into the spin direction. The force that spins you is created at the moment you leave the snow and cannot be added in the air, so match the pop and the shoulder release exactly together.

  4. Let your head and shoulders lead first, then your hips, and let the board (front foot and back foot) follow last.

Tuck both arms in near your chest, close to your body. The tighter you pull your arms in, the faster you spin with the same momentum, so the rotation finishes in time.

  5. Once you pass 90 degrees (sideways), spot the airmat landing with your eyes.

By 180 degrees, bend your knees to absorb the impact and land back-first in a switch stance (back foot forward). Because it is an airmat, you don't need to stomp it; just stay rounded and let the mat catch you.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Send your eyes toward the spin direction before you pop, and the body links up head to shoulders to hips. Your face acts like a rudder pulling the body around.

COMMON MISTAKE

Spin stalls around 135 degrees and you drop near forward-facing → your eyes didn't follow all the way around. Send your face back to the very end and release the shoulder twist fully.
