How to

Step by step
  1. Start in your basic riding stance, sliding straight on the brush surface.

Keep both knees softly bent and your eyes on the direction of travel about 10 meters ahead, not down at your feet. On a gentle slope, hold a slow, steady speed that won't stop you out.

  2. Bend your back knee and ankle deeper while sending your hips back over your back foot.

At the same time straighten the front knee a little, shifting your weight back toward the heel side of your back foot.

  3. As the nose (front) starts to lift, stop and settle with your hips stacked directly over your back foot.

Keep your chest up and spine tall rather than hunching forward — staying upright keeps you from tipping backward once all your weight is on the back foot.

  4. Hold that position.

Brush (artificial turf) grips more than snow, so the tail is less likely to slide out, making it easier to balance still for a few seconds. Fine-tune by rocking between the ball of your back foot and your heel.

  5. To exit, slowly bring your hips back toward the front foot, let the lifted nose touch down gently, then return to an even, both-knees stance.

Coming back too fast slams the nose down and throws you forward, so ease out of it.

Tips

The key is sending your hips back until they stack directly over your back foot. If you only bend the knee and leave your hips forward, your weight never fully loads the back foot and the nose won't lift.

COMMON MISTAKE

Falling onto your butt → You sent your hips past your back foot, letting your weight slip out behind your heel. Stop your hips right over the back foot and keep your chest up to hold your height.
