How to

Step by step
  1. Start once your basic brush carving (one full turn each way, larger arcs) feels stable.

Roll onto a medium slope at a steady, medium speed you can both keep and stop.

  2. Set your base stance.

Soften your ankles, knees, and hips into a slightly low position, bending both knees roughly 30 to 45 degrees. Keep your weight forward, over the ball of your front foot. Brush grabs more than snow, so sitting back lifts the nose and the board stops running.

  3. Sink into the turn entry.

Bend both knees deeper and drop your hips, shifting your weight onto the edge you want to ride (toe side for the toe edge, heel side for the heel edge). Sinking presses the board down so the edge digs into the bristles.

  4. Rise up through the middle and exit of the turn.

Extend your knees and hips to lift your body, and the load on the board releases for a moment. That light moment is your cue to switch edges.

  5. At the top of the rise, switch quickly to the opposite edge.

Toe to heel: drive your knees from the inside toward your heels. Heel to toe: tip your knees and shins forward onto your toes. The shorter you keep the board flat (neither edge biting), the less the brush catches you on a wrong edge.

  6. Keep your chest and belly button facing down the fall line the whole time.

Swing only from the hips down, keeping your upper body still. That twist between upper and lower body (counter-rotation) drives the quick, short turns.

  7. Look two or three turns ahead along the line you want, not at the nose.

Sending your eyes ahead keeps your upper body facing downhill and your rhythm even.

  8. Link "sink, rise, switch" at a steady tempo.

At first, counting out loud helps keep the spacing even and the rhythm locked in.

Tips

When you sink, bend your ankles too and tip your shins forward, not just your hips. Dropping only your hips with straight ankles puts you in the back seat, lifting the nose so the brush stalls the board.

COMMON MISTAKE

You slow down and stall mid-run → Back-seat weight lifts the nose so the full edge never bites and the brush wins. Move your weight onto the ball of the front foot and re-bend your ankles to tip your shins forward.
