How to

Step by step
  1. Start only once your basic turns and straight runs on the brush (artificial slope) feel solid.

On a gentle slope, run the board straight at a slow, steady speed that is just fast enough not to stall.

  2. Look slightly ahead in your direction of travel.

Bend both knees lightly (about 30 degrees) and stand over the middle of the board. Keep your hands out at hip height so you can correct any side-to-side tilt right away.

  3. Straighten your back leg while shifting your weight onto the ball of your front foot (the base of the big toe).

At the same time, slide your hips toward the nose (front) until your belly button sits directly over your front foot. Keep your back straight rather than folding at the waist.

  4. Flex your front ankle so your shin tilts forward, pressing the nose into the surface as you commit your weight.

The tail (back) will start to lift. Once it lifts, lock the pose with your weight stacked over the front foot. Keep looking ahead and do not turn to watch the tail.

  5. The brush has more friction than snow, so the nose can dig in and stop you suddenly.

Use less weight on the front foot than you would on snow. If you feel the nose sinking too deep, move on to the next step right away.

  6. To recover, feed your weight gradually back to the rear foot and slide your hips back to the middle of the board.

When the tail lowers to the surface, return to a normal stance with both knees bent.

Tips

Load the ball of your front foot. Weighting the heel keeps the tail down so it will not lift; pressing through the toe side lets the nose grip the surface.

COMMON MISTAKE

The nose digs into the brush and you fall forward → Too much weight on the front foot. Use less than on snow and load it slowly.
